The existing backyard had a rotten deck stretching the entire length of the home. That was our starting point for a complete rethink. We designed a smaller, refined deck anchored by an outdoor kitchen and gathering area. Below that, a lower patio and gas firepit opened up the yard, creating distinct outdoor rooms that feel larger and far more livable.
We designed and built every element of the backyard. The one exception was the existing retaining wall as it was installed incorrectly and failing. We stripped it down, reused the original block, and rebuilt it to last a lifetime.
The new deck features a raised bar top overlooking the lake. Above the outdoor kitchen, we built a custom pergola to cut the afternoon sun while grilling.
The patio has two connected spaces. A generous living room area finished in interlocking pavers flows into a firepit patio enclosed by a custom pillar wall. The pillar wall defines the room and gives it an intimate, purposeful feel. Along the perimeter, we planted Karl Foerster ornamental grasses for natural privacy screening from neighbouring properties.
We balanced the hardscape with low-maintenance plantings. They complement the stonework and bring a natural softness to the space.
The result is a backyard built for real life — a space that draws everyone outside from the first warm days of spring through every fall evening.
